You are tired and you try to relax...

But you can't as the squadron has been put on 15 minute alert. There you are outside, near your Gustav in full flight gear, waiting for the upcoming mission. Like so often lately the Ami's heavy bombers, or Dicke-Autos, are sure to come this way, probably to hit Schweinfurt again. Its a far cry since the "happy days" of 1939-42, this year will be different...

Most of your buddies are playing Skat to pass the time waiting, but there is only room for so many players and anyway you are broke since yesterday's game. You can feel the tension rising and so you decide to listen to some music and look at those "liberated" pictures. Those Ami's sure have good taste when it comes to art, well this kind of art anyway.

hmmm...nice curves.

aah, a career girl...schön

You hope that your ground crew has repaired that faulty gun arming switch. Nothing worse then flying into the middle of a hornet's nest and finding out that you have no guns. Almost didn't make it that time..

Luckily there weren't any fighter escorts around, or else you might have bought it. No room for error in a war like this one.

Is your brother, who is fighting on the Russian Front, still alive? Last time you received a letter from him he wrote that he was very tired but doing fine - "Ruskie won't get me that fast!" - always a cocky son of a gun that older brother of yours. Why didn't he join the Luftwaffe? No...he had to join the same regiment as father in WW1. Well, you have a lot of respect for the Russians, they fight hard and with little fear of dying...less then you, or so it seemed sometimes.

its bloody tough in Russia...

Back to the business of killing bombers, or maybe more precise: how to survive attacking a box of heavy bomber. Just imagine ten .50 cal. MGs on each heavy bomber, then multiply by twelve or more per box.

But you don't envy the bomber crews either, if anything, you still prefer being the hunter. Bombers can't make heavy evasive maneuvres, they have to remain in formation and on course if they hope to take out their target. They rely on mutual cover and force of number, but if one gets separated its as good as dead.

that one won't make it...

The mind goes back to your old comrades from 3./JG 54, you haven't heared from them since transferring to 2./JG 1. Although a tough war, as all wars are tough, there was plenty of room for celebration. You and your mates got a fair share of kills there, not that the Russian wasn't tough or brave, but their crates and tactics simply weren't good enough.

good old days.

Why depress yourself when you might not make it past this afternoon? Treat yourself to some more nice pin-ups, these are even more artistic. Nah-nah-nah...sehr Schön! When this war is over you might try and visit Amerika, maybe find such a grand woman as pictured here and make a decent wife of her, well...not too decent of course, just a little naughty, why should you spoil a good thing when you can have it both ways...

shy beauty...

naughty but married...

Suddenly you are back in reality...Alarmstart!

You drop the pack of pictures on the ground and run to your fighter. Your mind goes blank, back to the ugly business of killing and survival. You place more importance on the latter...

next "liberator"
